It’s early January and we’re wondering why we wait until late winter to begin running our winter bicycle tours in Arizona. Following a 40 mile ride on Tucson’s fabulous bike paths, we’re now lounging under clear blue skies by the pool at Lodge on the Desert.

It took a bit to get rolling this morning after an amazing dinner last night at The Hub, one of Tucson’s hip new restaurants that has cropped up in the midst of the downtown revitalization. Our “Are we really in the desert?” Ahi carpaccio was followed by a wonderful roasted corn, avocado, and arugula salad with heirloom tomatoes topped by a chili-lime vinaigrette. When we said we were too full for dessert our attentive waiter brought us samples of four of The Hub’s more than 20 different homemade ice creams. The rich creamy sweetness of the Tiramisu flavor made us vow to return.

This morning we devoured the Lodge on the Desert’s signature huevos rancheros which Kurt says is the best he’s ever had. It’s a tough job but somebody has to keep tabs on the local cuisine. Fortunately we’re getting the occasional chance to burn off our research during a ride.  Now, off to wine country to develop an entirely new twist to our already extraordinary Arizona bike tour. Stay tuned for more updates from Susan and Kurt, out and about in the sunny southwest.
