The Little Known Gem: Biking in Canada’s Most Beautiful Wine Country
Wine Country typically embodies all of the elements of a fantastic bicycling vacation: scenic countryside, elegant accommodations, exceptional cuisine, and interesting history. The beautiful and little known Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, Canada is one such place.
In addition to the wine, there are numerous bike paths and quiet country roads to be explored during our Niagara Wine Country bicycling vacation. In the tiny village of Jordan, a former sugar mill converted into a lovely inn is owned by one of the area’s most noted wineries which also features one of Ontario’s finest restaurants.
In the charming and historic town of Niagara-On-the-Lake, explore shops and restaurants, and perhaps take in a show at the world renowned Shaw Theatre Festival which runs all season. There’s even a new gelatteria that just opened last week and serves up delicious and authentic Italian gelato – verified first-hand!
The region’s roots are agricultural – firmly entrenched in peaches and cherries – so it makes perfect sense that grapes grow well in this area. Tucked between the shores of Lakes Erie and Ontario, the climate is moderated by Lake Ontario which allows for a longer growing season than one might anticipate. And though Icewine thrust the Niagara region into world fame, the bulk of the wine produced here is Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, and Cabernet varietals.
The Niagara Wine Country is a little gem of a place that you can experience fully on our Sojourn bicycling vacation. Easy cycling, luxurious lodging, and lots of cultural and historic points of interest make this a favorite spring and fall getaway.
