This Vermont bike tour in the Lake Champlain Valley starts with a picnic lunch on the charming Vergennes village green, perched above a waterfall. From here, this classic route – recognized by Frommer’s as one of the “Ten Best in the World” – follows country roads and the lakeshore to reveal the best of Vermont’s Green Mountains and New York’s Adirondacks. Ride through one of the longest-covered bridges in the state and visit the Stephen A. Douglas Museum. Cycle through Bristol to the tiny hamlet of Lincoln, where you can cool off with a dip in the local swimming hole. Continue to the iconic New England college town of Middlebury to meet the beautiful horses at the University of Vermont Morgan Horse Farm, home to the world’s most highly regarded breeding stock. Follow Vermont’s longest river, Otter Creek, as you return to the shores of Lake Champlain and the gorgeous Basin Harbor Club. Cross the lake to Crown Point to tour the remains of a historic fort. You’ll also have the chance to cruise across the lake to Westport, New York, for a ride through the Adirondack Park, to Essex, New York – an entire town listed on the National Historic Register.
Start off your Vermont bicycle tour with a cruise across Lake Champlain to Essex, NY. Essex is a charming lakeside hamlet which features one of the most intact ensembles of pre-civil war architecture. Disembark here for a beautiful ride through the Adirondack Park to Westport, NY. Return to Vermont and arrive at your home for the next two nights: the Basin Harbor Club.
Ride through valley farmland for a visit to the remains of a historic fort across the bridge from Crown Point. The ride over the bridge offers panoramic views of Lake Champlain and surrounding farmland.
Wind your way South to the Vergennes, where you can stop and enjoy lunch at the delightful, historic town green. Don't forget a local chocolatier is right around the corner! Roll through the Champlain valley with the Green Mountains to your left and the lake to your right to eventually arrive in Middlebury, a classic New England college town and one of the most iconic in the US. Here, the Middlebury Inn, located in the old governor's mansion in the heart of downtown, will host us for the night.
Continue South along quiet country roads to the small town of Brandon, VT. From here, you will cruise along scenic lake Dunmore to an exquisite picnic lunch prepared by your leaders at Branbury State park. This lunch features great views, and is a mere stone throw away from a short hike up to the falls of Lana. For those more avid riders, you will be able to extend the ride up to Middlebury gap and its Breadloaf campus, which once was home to the famous American poet Robert Frost. The final lodging for the week is the historic Waybury Inn, a gorgeous inn nestled at the foot of the mountains which has serviced weary travelers for generations.
Wind your way north to Bristol then on to the tiny hamlet of Lincoln nestled in a small valley below the towering peaks of the Green Mountains. Enjoy a dip in a local swimming hole before following the river back to the Waybury inn where we get dinner.
Begin your day with a guided tour of the beautiful University of Vermont Morgan Horse Farm, home to the most highly regarded breeding stock in the world. Follow Otter Creek, Vermont’s longest river, past lovely farms before arriving back on the shore of Lake Champlain at the Sojourn headquarters.
