Tour Overview

Summer Lake Champlain Valley, Vermont Bicycle Tour

Nestled between Vermont’s Green Mountains and New York’s Adirondack Mountains is spectacularly beautiful Lake Champlain. Country roads, charming inns, and a classic lakeside resort form the framework for this Vermont bike tour, named by Frommer’s as one of the “Ten Best in the World.”

One of the top locations in the world for bicycling is in Vermont – right outside the door of Sojourn’s headquarters in the Lake Champlain Valley. Witness Vermont’s endless shades of green during spring and summer and be enthralled by the lake’s natural beauty.

Enjoy lightly traveled roads that wind through classic Vermont landscapes. Gentle valley farmland provides miles of fabulous cycling and mountain foothills are close enough to provide challenging options for those who want them.

Follow back roads through centuries old farmland sprinkled with classic barns and Vermont’s signature Holstein cows. Ride through several of Vermont’s signature covered bridges and enjoy stunning views of the Adirondack Mountains during a private cruise across Lake Champlain.

This is a true inn-to-inn Vermont bike tour as there are no vehicle transfers during the trip. Fly into Burlington, frequently listed as one of the top places to live in the US, and we’ll transport you the short distance to the start of the tour and return you to the airport at its conclusion.

Tour Itinerary

  • Day
    1

Start off with a picnic lunch in Vergennes which features a picturesque village green perched above a waterfall. Pass through one of Vermont’s signature covered bridges en route to the Waybury Inn, home for next two nights, where a cold pint awaits in the pub.

  • Day
    2

Ride through one of the longest covered bridges in Vermont and stop for a visit to the Stephen A. Douglas Museum. Enjoy a short hike to waterfalls, and then relax on the lakeshore.

  • Day
    3

Wind your way north to Bristol then on to the tiny hamlet of Lincoln nestled in a small valley below the towering peaks of the Green Mountains. Enjoy a dip in a local swimming hole before following the river to the classic New England college town of Middlebury where Swift House Inn, the former governor’s mansion, will host us for the night.

  • Day
    4

Begin your day with a guided tour of the beautiful University of Vermont Morgan Horse Farm, home to the most highly regarded breeding stock worldwide. Follow Otter Creek, Vermont’s longest river, past lovely farms, before arriving on the shore of Lake Champlain to the stunning Basin Harbor Club.

  • Day
    5

Ride through valley farmland for a visit to the remains of a historic fort across the bridge from Crown Point. The ride over the bridge offers panoramic views of Lake Champlain and surrounding farmland.

  • Day
    6

Begin the day with a cruise across Lake Champlain to Westport, NY. Disembark for a beautiful ride through the Adirondack Park to Essex, NY, the entire town of which is listed on the National Historic Register. Return to Vermont by ferry for a farewell picnic lunch overlooking the lake.
