FAQs

  • Start & End: The tour starts at the Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish Montana at 12:30 PM. (Warning: if looking to book the lodge for the night beforehand, you will need to do so very far in advance. Other hotels and inns in Whitefish/Kalispell are also an option.) The tour concludes at the Glacier International Airport (FCA) at 12:00 PM on the final day.
  • Meals: All breakfasts, as well as most dinners and lunches are covered. We leave a few evenings and afternoons open for you to explore the variety of restaurants in the area. We strongly recommend researching opening hours and making a reservation for the restaurants you pick.
  • Shuttle: In order to offer you the best of the area on a trip, we need to make use of shuttles to get from A to B. The tour starts with a 45 minute shuttle to the park and concludes with a 2 hour shuttle back to the Glacier Airport.
  • Accommodations: The lodges and hotels on this trip are visually striking, but can offer more casual service than is common for Sojourn tours. The area is very rural, and these boutique locations offer authentic and comfortable service.
  • Routes: Most of the riding is on roads with sparse traffic, except on the iconic going-to-the-sun road. Here, we are not allowed to offer van support and there is a minimal shoulder with the potential of considerable traffic. We encourage guests who feel nervous to get in the van for this difficult climb.
  • E-Bike: Limited number of E-bikes are offered on a first come first serve basis.
  • Van support: There are a few longer ride days and you can choose to ride as much or as little as you want. Our vans are always there to offer you a break, but reception can be limited in the park so communicating to your tour leaders beforehand is essential.
  • Flexibility: Our trips are designed to be flexible, giving you the freedom to experience it the way YOU want. So if you want some downtime or to do things on your own, our leaders will work to find you the best days to do it.
  • Routing and Scheduling: The itinerary we provide can change on a certain day in terms of restaurant time, road closures, and weather conditions. Our leaders are fully trained at offering alternate plans and solutions. We seek your cooperation and promise to deliver the best vacation experience regardless.

Hear from Guests on the Trip

Where does one begin? At age 72 I was a little apprehensive about some of the climbs, but the leaders said I could do it. The ride up Logan’s Pass was challenging but I was so happy to have made it. The scenery was spectacular and the next day when I saw the Prince of Wales Hotel in the distance, I could hardly believe we were going to be staying in such a marvelous place, then the Glacier Lodge blew me away as well. Cycling across the border into Canada was certainly something that was unique and memorable. All these experiences will be treasured the rest of my life.

“What a memorable trip of a lifetime! Glacier National Park with its breathtaking views and iconic “Going to the Sun Road,” is a cyclist’s paradise together. Sojourn’s accommodations, route design, meals, and the socials were outstanding. A group of cyclists who came to a bike tour as strangers left as a family of close friends. I so look forward to my next trip with Sojourn! “

Glacier/Waterton was breathtaking, and staying in iconic lodges like Prince of Wales and St. Mary’s felt like traveling back in time—in the best way. It wasn’t about chain-hotel luxury; it was about views, ambiance, and history. The leaders were exceptional—organized, flexible, and truly helped the group connect. The rides were extraordinary, the picnic lunches were outstanding, and the GPS navigation made everything effortless.

Barbara Reville

Of course the actual riding was the highlight, there is no better way to experience the grandeur of the park I am sure. The feeling of accomplishment when we got to the Logan pass summit was unsurpassed. The lodging and food were above par as well. Lastly, the entire group was very fun to be around and we all chose to dine together even on nights we didn’t have to.

DAY BY DAY

Glacier National Park Bike Tour

DAY 1

Welcome to Whitefish and Montana’s great Rocky Mountains. Meet your Sojourn leaders at Grouse Mountain Lodge, just steps from downtown Whitefish at the foot of Glacier National Park.  After a quick fitting to your bike, get on your first ride along the shores of seven-mile-long Whitefish Lake. Ride past the beautiful lakeside mountain homes under the shadow of 6,817-foot-high Big Mountain, home to Whitefish Mountain resort. Watch for deer and grouse rustling in the bushes, while fishermen cast for trophy trout.  Tonight, gather with your bicycling companions for a fireside welcome reception and dinner.

DAY 2

Experience the ride of a lifetime along Glacier’s phenomenal Going-to-the-Sun-Road. Climb Logan’s Pass, topping out at 6,646 feet, and cross North America’s Continental divide, separating the Atlantic and Pacific watersheds. (From Glacier’s Triple Divide Peak, waters can Ocean or Hudson Bay.)  Leaving early – we’ll ride from west to east – from the Apgar Visitor Center to St. Mary’s Lake, winding past glacier-carved peaks, emerald lakes and countless waterfalls. Be ready to stop for photos at every pull out — bald eagles flying overhead, meadows overflowing with wildflowers, grazing bighorn sheep and snow-white mountain goats. (Please note: Van support and shorter options are also offered on this challenging ride.) Catch your breath at the Logan Pass visitor center, and perhaps take a short walk beyond the boardwalk for panoramic mountain views. Continue your ride, descending past Jackson Glacier, one of the largest remaining glaciers in Glacier National Park, to St. Mary’s Lake and your next historic lodge. Dwarfed by the surrounding mountains, the lake’s iconic Wild Goose Island rises just 14 feet – and is one of the most photographed spots in the Rockies. Tonight, savor Montana’s regional specialties – buffalo, fresh trout, prime rib and sweet huckleberry desserts  at a delectable dinner.

DAY 3

Leave Glacier National Park for today’s ride across the border to Alberta, Canada’s Waterton Lakes. The two parks were combined to form the world’s first International Peace Park in 1932, symbolic of the friendship shared between Canada and the United States along this pristine section of the border. Here, you’ll pedal through verdant forests of fir and aspen with views of Chief Mountain. The striking flat-topped peak on the Blackfeet Reservation towers 9,085 feet high on the Rocky Mountain Front.  Break for a picnic lunch at Maskinonge Lake and wetlands, a favorite spot for birdwatchers – listen for the booming call of the Sandhill Crane or watch the ospreys dive for their supper. Roll on along the Waterton Lakes towards the Prince of Wales Hotel, your stately home for the next three nights. Established in 1927, the green-gabled hotel is perched majestically atop a hill with expansive views of Upper Waterton Lake and the surrounding mountains. Enjoy the unparalleled views over a leisurely dinner at the hotel’s elegant Dining Room.

Options today are plenty at the scenic Waterton Lakes – Go hiking to Bertha Lake and view both Cameron and Bertha Falls. Or, you can hike to Red Rock Canyon and explore the lush valleys brimming with wildflowers. Some of you may want to ride to Cameron Lake or along the Red Rock Parkway where you’re sure to see an assortment of wildlife along the way – white tail and mule deer, elk, moose, and big horn sheep.

Returning to the U.S., hop on your bike after breakfast to ride into Two Medicine Lake in East Glacier. Settle into the historic Glacier Park Lodge, the first hotel built by the Great Northern Railway, and the first stop on visitors’ Glacier Park vacations for decades. Gather with your leaders to learn about the history and lore of the lodge, known as “The Big Tree Lodge.” Have some fun with a round of “chip and putt” golf at the Blackfeet Reservation. Tonight, toast your adventures – and yet another spectacular view – at your farewell dinner at the lodge.
