Sojourn Bicycling Vacations

Menu

4 Days / 3 Nights | Rating: Intermediate | Start / End: Las Vegas, NV

Welcome to California’s Death Valley, a sub-sea level basin that is home to stunning sand dunes, historic ghost towns, and mesmerizing color palettes. While the name and high temperature may be intimidating, this is one of the most surreally beautiful locations in the world. Start your Death Valley cycling trip with a beautiful bike ride through the Furnace Creek area, complete with views from Zabriskie Point and Harmony Borax Works, concluding the ride at The Inn at the Oasis. While Death Valley may be known for its warm winter temperatures, the accommodations at the Inn of Death Valley, a renowned desert oasis, offer respite from the dry desert heat. This luxury inn is surrounded by a canopy of palm gardens, and features a spring fed pool, making it no surprise that it was once a getaway for Hollywood elites. With the Inn as your home base, discover all that this desert gem has to offer. Explore the eerie ghost town of Rhyolite, home to abandoned streets and ominous statues that are fittingly reminiscent of ghosts. Walk upon the ancient lakebed of the Mesquite Sand Dunes and hike the stunning hills of Golden Canyon to Zabriskie Point for the most well-regarded view in all of Death Valley. This trip includes perhaps the most incredible sight of the week – a ride along Artist’s Drive. This iconic road is named for the natural beauty of the eroded desert hills, which are composed of vibrant colors that come from the oxidation of minerals found within. Experience the best of this California’s Mojave Desert on a Death Valley biking and hiking trip!

Day 2

Rhyolite and Mesquite Sand Dunes – After breakfast, take a short shuttle from the inn to Rhyolite, a once bustling locale that is now home to abandoned homes, crumbling businesses, and mysterious statues that populate the town. This ghost town began as a gold mining camp, attracting gold-seekers from all over in search of riches from the nearby Montgomery Shoshone Mine. However, it swiftly declined, and now stands as a reminder of California’s gold rush, with barren streets and only a few buildings left standing. After exploring Rhyolite, continue on to Stovepipe Wells, a small village that will be the site for today’s lunch.

KEEPING YOU POSTED

We’re constantly looking for ways to enhance our trips. We’ll do our best to notify you of any changes in this itinerary. Other changes may be communicated to you on the trip by your leaders.

Following lunch, explore the Mesquite Sand Dunes, one of the most popular landmarks in Death Valley National Park. Walk around and discover the alluring shapes of the crescent, linear, and star shaped dunes found here, stepping over the ancient, cracked lake bed that they lie upon. Dinner tonight will be held at the Last Kind Words Saloon and Steakhouse, one of the crown jewels of the Oasis property.

The ride begins with a route that travels to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in all of North America, laying 282 feet below sea level. The basin features an expansive landscape of salt flats, providing an otherworldly experience to walk upon. From Badwater Basin, shuttle to the top of Artist’s Palette for a mesmerizing ride back to the hotel. The route features incredible views of the surrounding hills, which have taken on a distinct rainbow of colors due to the oxidation of the minerals found throughout, a sight that is sure to not be forgotten soon. Upon returning to the hotel, enjoy your final evening at the property before our last dinner together at the Inn Dining Room.
